Vietnam War: Purple Heart?

My father was drafted and served in the Vietname War. During his time, he was hit by shrapnel from a bomb that went off infront of him. He was admitted to the hospital and had to have surgery--it hit him and embedded into his neck and left side chest area. He did recieve a Purple Heart for being wounded in action, however, while he was in the hospital and asleep, it was stolen right from his room. He is now 61, and as his daughter, I would like to try and get him another Purple Heart before Father's Day. I know the war was tough especially because of the way he and other soldiers were treated once they returned home.

My question is, how do I go about getting him this Heart back? Who do I contact and talk to about it? I know my mom has all of his information on where he was stationed, located, etc., so that's not a problem.

Thanks.

Vietnam War: Purple Heart?
To officially replace the medal you'll have to go to the government and request it. It is called eVetRecs and it is located online. I have provided you the link below. You fill out the form 180 which can be downloaded from the site and send it to the appropriate address shown there for the branch of service he was in. You will need a form called DD-214, which is a record of his military service. Should be in his home files somewhere. A replacement can be obtained through the government, too, but would take a while. It, or the medal, will probably take longer to receive than before Father's Day. As example, I've been waiting about 4 months now for a medal to be sent to me and they are projecting about another 4-5 months wait. You are dealing with the government and things are a bit slow as we all know. To get assistance look in your phone book for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, call and ask for an appointment with the Post Commander. They will assist you with getting things correctly done. Once you receive the medal you can ask for a ceremony to have once again returned to your Father.

Perhaps you won't get it all done by Father's Day, but it's the thought that counts. Your Dad was a hero and deserved the honor of being treated appropriately. Thanks for not only caring for him, but our other soldiers as well.

God Bless ourTroops.

Here's the link:

Reply:You can contact a local Veterans Hospital Disabled American Veterans member, and ask how to get an MOPH number. You will need his SSI number and dates of service,if you can find a DD214 you will have no problem, You can contact www.Iris.gov or try to call the records archives of the DOD in Missouri. You have to have Metal of Purple Heart documents or they will not issue one.His DD214 will have all his awards on it and that's all you need to get it..Your Mother is the key ,if she has all the info,it will be no problem.
Reply:You will need a copy of his DD214, to show that he has earned the purple heart and then you can just buy one.
Reply:It will cost you around $50 to purchase them. The odds that you received the free replacements by Fathers Day are iffy.

There are plenty of online stores that sell them. It's perfectly legal. The only one they don't sell is the MOH.

Uncle Sam is really run by well entrenched civilian bureaucrats.

Reply:I can't believe someone stole his Medal!

The fellas who wrote before are correct you will need a copy of his military records and as much info as possible to speed the process up as yes our government is slow to move.

Here is the direct link with all the info you need on replacement medals

Like everyone else said before me you will probably not get this before fathers day but this is a wonderful gift idea and he will LOVE it.

Here's an idea. On these guys website vetfriends.com they have purple heart products including a "replica mini medal" for 9.99. Go ahead and buy it for fathers day and then put it with his card and in the card you can comment "the real thing is on its way and will be here soon" Just an idea

Good Luck!
Reply:i would try taking the copy of the dd214 and talking with the local VFW, or American Legion. i'm sure the guys there would be very helpful and point you in the right direction.

Purple Heart and now Norway has its own version?

What was the original intention of the idea behind a Purple heart, was it meant to be for any injury in battle (or death) , how does someone like John Kerry get 3 of them for scratches and real soldiers for real injuries did'nt, how come no one can find who nominated John Kerry for them otther than his own recommendations. Another question now that Norway has brought out its version "Forsvarets medalje for sårede i strid" The Armed forces medal for injured in Battle. 7th one down in this article http://www.mil.no/fakta/start/om/gradero...

What other countires besides US and Norway has a "Purple Heart"?

Purple Heart and now Norway has its own version?
I wish I could read Norwegian (My Grandmother would be so proud) but the ribbon for that First Medal looks exactly like the US Bronze Star.
Reply:Yeah... The Norway version of the Purple Heart is also called Sour Grapes.

Aren't the bush sycophnats upset that gore won a nobel peace prize & bush couldn't even get a Purple Heart?

Were'nt you awarded NAMBLA'S version of the Purple Heart after you were wounded in that assault on an all boys school on Aug 22, 1983?

How is the search coming for that "dd 213" you claim you have?

Aren't the bush sycophnats upset that gore won a nobel peace prize %26amp; bush couldn't even get a Purple Heart?
Doesn't that rank Gore right up there with Yassir Arafat, Benito Moussolini, Josef Stalin and Adolph Hitler?
Reply:No, everyone expected Gore to win the Nobel peace prize

Which Is Faker? Ted Kennedy's Drunk Driving Murder Alibi Or John Kerry's Purple Heart Stories?

They're both great stories filled with the murder of innocents and selling out your friends, along with a few "slight" exagerations of truth. And both have witnesses saying that the stories are bogus.

So which story is faker?

Which Is Faker? Ted Kennedy's Drunk Driving Murder Alibi Or John Kerry's Purple Heart Stories?
Well Kerry actually HAS the medals, so some weenie military commander(s) bought his stories.

Kennedy, on the other hand....
Reply:Is this a trick question? I'd say both. They are both worthless, rotton, sacks of cow dung (had to use dung so I don't get another violation)!
Reply:You bringing up and beating a dead horse is as fake as it gets. But I guess that and whining about what kind of airplane Pelosi uses is all the republicans have anyway. By the way, did you serve? Somehow I doubt it.
Reply:I'm going to have to go with John Kerry's purple hearts as the fakist.
Reply:Have you been in combat in the military? Just wondering.
Reply:It's a tie.

"Clowns to the left of us, jokers to the right, here we are - stuck in the middle with them."
Reply:The drunks alibi!
Reply:John kerry's we still haven't seen any of his metals yet and have you noticed how he has kind of disappeared from the public!! I don't believe ted's story either!!!
Reply:Kennedy is the most fake,

at least there is room for debate on the Purple heart issue.
Reply:Better questions:

What is faker Laura Bush's vehicular manslaughter alibi or George W. Bush's claim that he is no longer an alcoholic?

Or maybe Cheney's claim that he only had one beer that day when he shot his friend instead of a bird.
Reply:Who cares they both washed up old school losers. They are the reason that our country is stuck in neutral along with such standouts as Robert KKK bird, now there is a great story. But I supose it is bogus too.
Reply:Toss a coin
Reply:Kennedy's is probably the fakest one of the two. I mean if anyone else had killed a girl by driving a car off a bridge, while intoxicated, they would have been thrown in jail..

It's kind of like Dick Cheney getting away with shooting someone else in the face. I mean the guy he shot APOLOGIZED TO CHENEY!!!! Dick Cheney is definitely my hero.

Purple Heart, is a US (American) Award, why would someone who claims he is a vet NOT know this?

Why would someone who “claims” to be a Vet ask a foreign citizen if he has Purple hearts, this clearly illustrates the person is no VET, when they do not know something as elementary as this.

For the record my country does not give medals for injuries, they used to give a “wounded badge” what country is this? And how old is the Purple Heart and what was it’s original intention?

How can you claim (this is to US Ex Service men) to be wounded in action and not miss any days out, not even requiring a band aid, can someone explain that to me, how is it TRUE American soldiers with real injuries did not get one, yet someone like John Kerry GOT not ONE but three, for three various scratches. Does the US system of Purple hearts need over hauling, would you not need a Doctor to examine you and agree first that you truly are injured and you can not just apply for one yourself? V

2. A wound is defined as an injury to any part of the body from an outside force or agent sustained under one or more of the conditions listed above. A physical lesion is not required, however, the wound for which the award is made must have required treatment by a medical officer and records of medical treatment for wounds or injuries received in action must have been made a matter of official record.

AR 600-8-22

We know all about Senator Kerry, And I for one have heard too much about him and his awards.

I would think any American Vet would know that this is an American Medal, (Has a pic of George Washington on it) And is currently a US Post Office Stamp. Maybe they didn;t know you weren't American? Or they could have been a poser.
Reply:There is a growing legion of sorry @$$ sonsofbitches who like to dress up and pretend that they are war heroes so it very likely you encountered a poser.

Reply:Ignorance doesn't necessarily mean fraud. Two uniformed members of the Arizona National Guard did not intervene when a living Medal of Honor winner was strip searched at the airport in Phoenix a few years ago. Neither of these soldiers had any familiarity with the medal's appearance. They thought it was some sort of Ninja throwing star. So did the guards of the Transport Security Administration. The gentleman who was searched had the medal in his jacket's inside pocket. He was on his way to give a talk at West Point.

The Purple Heart is given to those wounded in combat. Hospitalization or even extensive care at field aid station is not required. The medal dates back to the Continental Army in the War for American Independence. It was created by General George Washington as a medal for valor in combat but became one for being wounded. That is why the metal pendant below the cloth part of the medal contains a bas relief profile of Washington's face.

Usually I don't answer their question if they are immediately identified as a foreign citizen.

"For the record my country does not give medals for injuries, they used to give a “wounded badge” what country is this? And how old is the Purple Heart and what was it’s original intention?"

Never heard of a "wounded badge". The Purple Heart is very old---goes back to the Revolutionary War. The Purple Heart was given by George Washington to troops who died in combat during that time. It was later discontinued and recontinued after a period of time.

"How can you claim (this is to US Ex Service men) to be wounded in action and not miss any days out, not even requiring a band aid, can someone explain that to me, how is it TRUE American soldiers with real injuries did not get one, yet someone like John Kerry GOT not ONE but three, for three various scratches."

?

He didn't get any "scratches"--he was wounded---THREE times!

"Does the US system of Purple hearts need over hauling, would you not need a Doctor to examine you and agree first that you truly are injured and you can not just apply for one yourself? "

What are you talking about? One never could apply for one him/herself EVER. It was never like that. If such an application came onto a commander's desk (that was written by the injured soldier)--it was immediately discarded! That is not how the military gives out it's medals (period!).
Reply:How can you claim (this is to US Ex Service men) to be wounded in action and not miss any days out, not even requiring a band aid, can someone explain that to me?

yeah, I will explain it A HOLE! On June 11th, 2006, I was attached to 2nd Platoon, B/1-502 IN. We were SW of Baghdad. We were attacked ny 12-15 insurgents while in a local nationals home. Complex attack was followed up with a Suicide bomber in a dump truck. 20+ American Soldier received wounds (schrapnel, glass, concussions). 15+ Iraqi Soldiers were wounded. 4, count 'em, FOUR total were medevaced (2 US, 2 IA). No treatment by the doc, no "missed days". We stayed in the fight, rebuilt the Patrol Base, and rounded up a bunch of insurgents the next day.
Reply:Well I am a Brit vet with a Military Medal and I know what it is,I believe in the yank army army you have to be blooded in action.tell me someone if i am wrong
Reply:paddy, why are you always fighting with someone on YA?
Reply:What needs overhauling is the notion that only War mongers are deserving of their medals or to be called Real Soldiers.

A group funded by the biggest Republican campaign donor in Texas began running an attack ad Aug. 5 in which former Swift Boat veterans claim Kerry lied to get one of his two decorations for bravery and two of his three purple hearts.

But the veterans who accuse Kerry are contradicted by Kerry's former crewmen, and by Navy records.

One of the accusers says he was on another boat "a few yards" away during the incident which won Kerry the Bronze Star, but the former Army lieutenant whom Kerry plucked from the water that day backs Kerry's account. In an Aug. 10 opinion piece in the conservative Wall Street Journal, Rassmann (a Republican himself) wrote that the ad was "launched by people without decency" who are "lying" and "should hang their heads in shame."

And on Aug. 19, Navy records came to light also contradicting the accusers. One of the veterans who says Kerry wasn't under fire was himself awarded a Bronze Star for aiding others "in the face of enemy fire" during the same incident.
Reply:wow still swift boating Kerry...

he lost you all won and the rest is history.

Are Purple Heart Medals made from real gold & what carrot?

That is a good question and I have the answer. No!

A Purple Heart is awarded to a military serviceman or woman in the "U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded".

I know the medal is not gold or any precious medal because I have been awarded 3 + now I can only find documents of 2 from wounds I received during my 1969-1970 tour in Vietnam.

Are Purple Heart Medals made from real gold %26amp; what carrot?
Purple Hearts are made from a mettle far more precious than gold.
Reply:They have a brass core that has been anodized to the gold color. So they are not made from gold at all. Or anything more precious.
