Since its inception on April 5, 1917 the Purple Heart medal has been made of Bronze.
Dose anyone know if a 1970 military issued purple heart is made of solid gold?
It was actually created on Aug 7, 1782 at Newburgh, New York by General George Washington and was originally called the "Badge of Military merit" This award was specifically designed for enlisted and Non-commissioned officers during the Revolutionary war. It was not known as the Purple heart until Feb 22, 1932 when Gen Douglas MacArthur announced the change under the War department general orders number three dated 22 Feb 1932, the 200th anniversary of General George Washington's birth. The purple heart has been awarded to over 1,000,000 personnel, the Badge of military merit was only known to be awarded to 3 individuals during the Revolutionary war.
Reply:It is not made of gold.Over 800,000 Purple Hearts have been given, the cost would be prohibitive. It is possible however to have one privately struck for such things as a memorial or commemorative or as a family heirloom.
Reply:NO purple heart medals are made of Gold. They are Bronze with a gold finish
