Established by George Washington, the original Purple Heart was designated as the Badge of Military Merit and was only awarded to three Revolutionary War soldiers. The medal then was not used until after WWI
They tried to re activate the medal in the late 1920s but it was never approved.
The Purple Heart was revived on the 200th Anniversary of George Washington's birth, out of respect to his memory and military achievements, by War Department General Orders No. 3, dated 22 February 1932.
See this web site for the initial design and current design of the medal: http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Awards...

Reply:George Washington is featured on the Purple Heart. Originally, it was a medal designed to be awarded for meritorious service during the revolutionary war. Washington wanted to promote some of his people, to the next higher rank, but the Continental Congress did not have the funds so they made up and awarded the the medal instead. Later, the medal was awarded for injuries received in battle.
