If a soldier gets struck by an enemy bullet on his body armor and the bullet never pierces his body does he still get a purple heart? I do not know the qualifications for the purple heart. He was still wounded by the enemy by his bruises though right? So he would get a purple heart? But what if he was struck by a bullet in the body armor and doesn't recieve a bruise? I do not know about the qualifications for the purple heart.
Purple Heart Award and Body Armor?
I've seen purple hearts handed out for less, but no soldier worth anything would accept such a medal for such a "wound".
Reply:Your superiors are responsible for doing the write up recommending the award. Not everyone that gets wounded gets a purple heart.
Reply:No! he does not get a medal for his bruises.
Its for wounds and a bruise doesnt qualify.
Reply:No, You get a pebble in your boot, you gonna put in for "The Heart" then too?
Reply:yes you can. if you get hit in you body armor your ganna have a bad day, even if it does not penetrate you, because of the sheer force of it, it will transfer a lot of energy(pounds per square inch) into you. I had a buddy get hit with a 7.62x54r sniper round. he said it was like a mule kicked him square in the chest. He went down, and took a while to get back up. he had to be medivaced. he had broken ribs and a huge bruise, but he was alive, and has a purple heart. he still has the sapi plate hanging on his wall with the hole in it.
Reply:to get a purple heart you must be injured in combat by hostile actions and the shrapnel or bullet must enter your body or hit you hard enough to cause physical harm to wear you have to be treated by navy medics (corpsman) or be hospitalized.

Reply:If your name is Al Gore you would get 2, one for the vest and one for the bruise. For the rest of the world there has to be some nature of physical damage done,.
Reply:To get the purple heart you have to be wounded or killed in combat. Having a bullet in your body armor does not qualify as as being wounded unless he was injured and treated by a medical officer
"The wound for which the award is made must have required treatment by a medical officer and records of medical treatment for wounds or injuries received in action must have been made a matter of official record" %26lt;wikipedia quote%26gt;
Reply:Probably......
If you get hit on your SAPI plate even though the bullet doesn’t penetrate you will still have to be medivaced because your going to be hurt, more than likely hurt bad. We are not talking about a little bruise like you see on COPS or something. If you take an impact from a 7.62x39mm round to the chest and it doesnt penetrate you will more than likely have broken ribs, internal bleeding, and possibly a collapsed lung. You more than likely wont die though.
You would be a casualty either way due to enemy fire.
Since you will be a casualty due to enemy fire that would qualify you for the Purple Heart.

Yeah as "Doc" said below me if your unit doesnt put you in for one then you wont get it.
My unit didnt put in three Marines for Purple Hearts who got their backs shredded open by "friendly" artillery since it wasnt enemy fire.
It comes down to your unit really.
