My late father won a purple heart. I have no children and have heard there is a way to will or otherwise transfer a military medal to another vet for safekeeping in the years ahead. I don't want it to end up in a flea market when I am gone. Any ideas?
Finding a 'caretaker' for a purple heart?
Let me correct one thing before I answer your question. Your father did not win the Purple Heart. He EARNED the Purple Heart. A military member never WINS any medal, they EARN the medal.
Now to answer your question. Contact your local VFW, American Legion, or other veterans association and ask them about donating the medal in your fathers honor. I'm sure they would be very honored to receive the medal in memory of your father. You are to be commended for not wanting it to go to any flea market, that medal was earned at risk of his life.
You might want to contact the branch of service he served in and enquire about receiving a copy of the citation that goes with the award and when you present to the Veterans Association that would agree to accept it, you could include the citation along with a picture of your father if you have one.
Again, I commend you for your desire to honor your father.
Reply:I hope more people of our age group and our children will have the same view as you and I have. To honor those who served and remember their service as you are your fathers is something that could be accomplished with very little effort. Report It
Reply:Why not do a nice write up on your fathers life, and why he won the medal and donate it to a local museum? Specify that you don't want it sold.
It is nice that you don't want it sold off in any way and I hope you find an answer that solves your problem to your liking!
