What sorts of medals do servicemen get for getting killed in action?

I have always thought the purple heart was just for those who get wounded. Is there something that is giving to the next of kin for those who are killed in action? How long would it take for such a medal to be received? And is it different for different branches of the military? A website that gives a list would be useful. Thanks in advance.

Purple heart is the only medal that is automatically given to someone KIA

The rest would depend on their actions at the time of their death. Did they do something heroic was their actions vital to the completion of the mission.

They could get anything from a silver star a bronze star or even the medal of honor and a few other lesser awards or medals it just all depends.

But to answer your question there is no " I got Killed in Battle" Medal awarded and the time it would take would depend becuase the CO would have to write it up and from there it would have to go up the chain of command and get approved. Some medals like the Medal of Honor require higher people to approve them so they would take longer.

The two delta snipers who were killed in somolia and later awarded the MEdal of Honor (one's name was Sugart and the other Smith I beleive) There widows didnt get the medals until much later and was given to them by the president

It all depends if their CO wrote them up for a medal or citation

Oh yeah the nexto f kin gets a flag to it is presented to them by an officer of the burial detail and he say " On behalf of a greatful nation" as he hands it to the next of kin
Reply:purple heart but you could get other medals based on what the situation of your death was.
Reply:If he is KIA in Combat !!!!

Reply:The Purple Heart is awarded posthumously to all who die in combat. The medal is given to the primary next of kin. That next of kin is also presented with an American flag after the mortal remains of the deceased member of the armed forces is laid to rest. That flag is a gift presented in the nameof the President of the United States, whether or not the member died from combat or non-combat causes.

The preceding is policy for all branches of the armed forces.
Reply:The Medal of Honor can be given posthumously.
Reply:Purple Heart is for wounded or death. if you're killed, you get the purple heart, if you're wounded, you get the purple heart. depending on the circumstances during the time of death, the Soldier may receive a Medal of Honor, Silver Star, or Bronze Star (and there's a few others). if this was an overwhelming battle, and the soldier really went above and beyond, he might get the Medal of Honor. keep in mind there's only been 2 Medal of Honor's awarded in the Iraq war, and with over 4,000 dead, you can get an understanding of how hard it is to become a recepient. the bronze star is the most common medal awarded if a soldier is killed in combat, but then there are circumstances when a higher award is given, such as the silver star. but of the friend's i've lost, all were awarded the bronze star.
